Old Testament: 1 Chronicles 4:9-10- A Fresh Start
1 Chronicles 4:9-10
“Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “’Because I bore him in pain.’ And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ‘Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!’ So God granted him what he requested.”… Read More

Majesty Of God

Psalms 104:1
“Bless the Lord, O my soul!
O Lord my God, You are very great:
You are clothed with honor and majesty”

images.jpegThe greatness of God causes the psalmist to break forth in praise. He writes of the majesty of the Lord who is clothed in light, stretches the heavens open like a curtain and is surrounded by a host of heavenly angels who do His bidding day and night. He speaks of God as the one who rides the clouds as a chariot and has set boundaries around the oceans but he spends the majority of his time celebrating how God cares for His creation. He sings of how the splendor of our King is seen in providing for the needs of those who are His. He has not only filled the earth with the basic staples to provide life but has gone beyond so that His people can enjoy life.

What peace is found when we realize the true nature of God. John explains that the reason Jesus came was so that we could see what God is really like.

John 1:14
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

We can find comfort, hope, help and provision from the God who created us and loves us. Whatever you may be facing keep in mind that the majesty of God is often most clearly seen in providing for the needs of those He loves.

Questions for Psalm 104

  1. As you read this Psalm take notice that the Psalmist is recounting the days of creation. For example, verses 1-2 describe day 1 of creation. Verses 2-3 describe day 2. Verses 6-18 describe day 3. See if you can pick out the last three.
  2. Verse 5 says that God’s foundation will never be removed. We have an immovable foundation. His name is Jesus and He said, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of mine and does them is rock solid.” How is your foundation? Is it on solid rock or is it on sinking sand?
  3. You have heard the old saying, “Stop and smell the roses.” Look at verse 24. God made a variety of things in wisdom. Be encouraged. Get out there and check out the bugs and His other wonderful creatures.
  4. Verses 27-28 tell us that we depend on Him for everything; our every breath comes from Him. God wants the best for us. Do you desire to do His will and learn more of His plans for each new day? If not, read verse 29 and repent.

Valor

1 Chronicles 7:40
“All these were the children of Asher, heads of their fathers’ houses, choice men, mighty men of valor, chief leaders…”

images.pngWhat makes a person a “mighty man of valor?” Is it great strength? If that were the case Samson would be the most valiant man to have ever lived, instead of a man of wasted potential. Is it physical stature? King Saul was a head taller than anyone else in Israel yet he certainly lacked the ingredients that makes one valiant. Is it superior intellect? We know that Solomon was the most intelligent man of his day, yet with all that knowledge he did more to lead Israel away from the Lord than all who had gone before him. What then are the character qualities that make a person a man of valor?

Gideon is forever known as a mighty man of valor. Scripture tells us that this title was given to him while he was hiding from Midianite raiders. His title was given based upon who he would become not who he currently was. We find two key ingredients that turned Gideon from a coward to a man of valor.

The first is faith. Gideon chose to trust in the Word of God above his personal experience. When called by God to step into service Gideon did not allow his weakness to limit God. Instead He tested the promises of God and found them to be trustworthy.

Secondly Gideon lived in obedience to the Word. The Word of God was not something simply to read, highlight, underline, and Chart. For Gideon the Word was to be obeyed. When instructed to make changes in the home, cut the staff, or go to battle with all odds against him, Gideon got to work.

The world needs mighty men of valor today more than ever. Don’t let your limits get in the way of what God may want to do with your life. Instead of focussing on your weakness, look into His promises and put them into practice in your life.

Covenant

2 Kings 23:3
“Then the king stood by a pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, to follow the Lord and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people took a stand for the covenant.”

The stories recorded in the Bible are designed to impact our lives and affect out behaviors. Here we find Josiah the king making a public commitment to follow the Lord. While his actions were public they were in no way political. This was not an attempt to raise his approval rating or get in good with the special interest groups. He was choosing to stand against what was popular, accepted and even politically correct and choose to commit himself and his reign to the Lord. Two things stand out to me regarding his decision.

First, it took place while standing by a pillar. I think if we were writing the story we would have Josiah at the altar or kneeling before the veil but it simply did not happen that way. Standing next to a pillar he devoted himself to His God.  Wherever you are is the right place to commit yourself to Christ. I have heard testimonies of believers who pulled their car off the road while listening to Christian radio and devoted themselves to Christ, others who were in hotel rooms where they found a strategically placed Bible in the nightstand. I even met a woman who in the middle of the night, alone at her home prayed to devote herself to the Lord, then went down the hall and baptized herself in the bath tub. Wherever you are it is the right time and place to commit yourself and your ways to the Lord. Don’t wait for it to become popular or acceptable. Give yourself completely to Christ today.

Secondly, I notice that Josiah’s commitment had a tremendous affect on others. When he devoted himself to the Lord others followed and eventually the nation was impacted. Often we neglect to be committed because we don’t want to stand out or be the only one. It is not uncommon in marriages that one person desires a deeper walk with Christ but holds back because they are uncertain how their spouse will respond. I think we should keep in mind the fact that others are looking for an example to follow. Your home will be transformed when you devote yourself more completely to Christ. Your decision will impact your spouse, your children and ultimately your world.

Sing To The Lord

Psalms 96:1
“Oh, sing to the Lord a new song!
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.”

IMG_8267A few years ago, while visiting a church, this particular verse was shared during the praise and worship. The worship leader drew application from the verse by encouraging everyone to sing whatever came to their mind at the moment. The result was a vast array of voices singing, speaking and in some cases shouting out different things about the character of God. While I do not doubt the sincerity of the worship team, or the congregation for that matter, I wonder if that is the best application for this verse. The psalmist, a song writer himself is actually encouraging us to author our own song to the Lord.

Songs are often written out of experience. A person endures a difficulty in life and puts a poem to music that reflects the way they felt or the things they learned. The same is true when we have happy, sad or lonely experiences. Rarely are songs ever written without a story behind them. As a result, perhaps the Psalmist is encouraging us to experience more of the Lord so we have more to sing about. If you haven’t taken a step of faith lately, perhaps now would be a good time. The end will be that you have written a new song about the faithfulness of the Lord.

Take some time to pray about what new ways the Lord a wants you to serve Him.
